In 2016, Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero proposed that Knoxville-Knox County Planning conduct a complete review and update of the City’s zoning ordinance.

After City Council approved funding for the request, City and Planning staff worked to develop a team with both local and national expertise.

The City of Knoxville initiated the zoning ordinance update and funds were approved for the project by City Council. City staff administer the zoning ordinance on a day-to-day basis and will play a key role in identifying areas where improvements in the current ordinance are needed. City Council approves the any modifications to the City’s zoning ordinance.

This 20-member committee includes a broad cross-section of the Knoxville community and will be responsible for providing input about the update throughout the process.

Knoxville-Knox County Planning (Planning)

Planning staff will lead the update process and the Executive Director will serve as the point of contact between the City and the consultant.  A recommendation from the appointees of the 15-member Planning Commission will precede a hearing by City Council.
